1955 Timeline - Remember Back in Time

Following are some highlights and events from way back in 1955.

US gave $216 million in aid to South Vietnam.
Tornadoes killed 29 people in Mississippi.
The United States Air Force unveiled the self-guided missile.
In the Philippines, 200 died as an earthquake that hits the south.
President Eisenhower increased the minimum wage to $1 per hour.
Israel celebrated the discovery of oil.
An Alabama woman was bruised by a meteor.
US occupation of Japan ended.
Argentina's President Juan Peron was overthrown by a military coup and fled to Spain.
The Warsaw Pact was signed by Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Albania, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania.
The Geneva Conference was held to discuss peaceful uses of atomic energy.
Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
A missile with an atomic warhead was tested in Nevada.
James Dean died in a car accident, after appearing in "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause".
Albert Einstein died of heart failure at age 76.
Harland Sanders started Colonel Sanders' Kentucky Fried Chicken (now KFC).
Disneyland which is part of Walt Disney empire, opened in California.
One of television favorites was "I Love Lucy" (CBS).
President of the United States was Dwight Eisenhower while the Vice President was Richard Nixon.
Life Expectancy was 69.6 years.
H&R Block was founded in Kansas City.


1955 Cost of Living:
New house cost $10,950.
New car was $1,910.
Average income was $4,137 per year.
Average rent was $87 per month.
Harvard University tuition fee was $800 per year.
Gasoline was 23 cents per gallon.
Movie Ticket was 75 cents each.
US postage stamp was 3 cents each.
Bacon was 58 cents per pound.
Eggs were 27 cents per dozen.
Vitamin D milk was 92 cents per gallon.


1955 Celebrities Birth Notices:

Bruce Willis, whose real name is Walter Bruce Willis, was born in March 19 in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany. He was first known on the tv series "Moonlightning". Some of his movies are "Die Hard", "The Sixth Sense", and "The Fifth Element".

Kevin Costner was born in Lynwood, California. He started acting at an early age. His directorial debut "Dances with Wolves" won both Best Picture and Best Director awards at the 1990 Academy Awards. Some of Kevin's other movies where he acted include "Tin Cup" and "Field of Dreams".
